FOD retail 2040 | Multi-lingual Survey for SME leaders

On behalf of the European Commission, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs we would like to invite SME leaders to participate in an EU-wide survey.

Your responses are important for the Commission to allow formulating adequate and effective policy measures that help the EU Retail sector dealing with the challenges which lay ahead, especially for the small and medium sized enterprises.

The retail sector has profoundly been hit by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and is currently again under pressure with the energy crisis. Policymakers are trying to find solutions. How would you respond to specific policies regarding digitalisation and sustainability as formulated in this survey?

Therefore we would like to consult you through this short survey.  This multilingual survey (DE, EN, ES, FR, IT, LT, RO, NL, SF) will provide important insights on your views on potential policy instruments. The survey was open until November 20, 2022, it is no closed and we are analysing the results.

Retail Ecosystem 2040 – Recommendations Workshop

After the summer break, the Retail 2040 project continues with full steam!  

We will organise an online workshop on October 13 from 10:00 to 13:00 CET with a focus on crafting and discussing recommendations for policymakers and other stakeholders.

 Twin transition for retail SMEs – Survey

You are invited to complete a survey as a representative of a small or medium-sized retail enterprise (SME) based in a Member State of the European Union. This survey is part of an independent study commissioned by the European Commission.

The objective of the study is to collect stories of small retailers who have transformed or tried to transform their business to make it greener, more digital and/or introduce customer-centric solutions.

The European Commission would like to better understand how small retailers evolve, what helps their transition and what hinders it. This is important in particular in the current times marked by the COVID crisis and economic uncertainties.

This is why we invite you today to share your retail story!

Whether your story is more or less of a success, we want to listen.

Some of the success stories will be included in a compendium of EU success stories that the European Commission will publish at the end of this project.

If your transformation has not been a success, we want to learn about the difficulties you have experienced on your way. This will help the European Commission better shape its future policies and act together with national, regional, and local authorities to support small retailers in their green and digital transition.  The survey takes 15 minutes to fill in.

The survey will remain open until August 20, 2022. Questions marked with * are compulsory.

The EU-wide Stakeholder Survey

As part of this Foresight Study “Retail Ecosystem 2040”, an EU-wide stakeholder survey is conducted by IDEA Consult on behalf of the European Commission, DG GROW.  

The retail system has profoundly been hit by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The goal of this survey is to collect stakeholder experiences, views and opinions about the situation and potential changes in retail and its interconnected sectors. This will provide a strong basis for the development of policies to support the resilience, innovativeness, sustainability and competitiveness of the EU retail ecosystem in the future.

Scenario Work on the EU Retail Ecosystem in 2040

Between March and May, four online workshops and other supporting online engagements are organised to develop four scenario narratives to describe alternative futures of the retail ecosystem in the EU by 2040, especially on the varying degrees to which operators in the retail ecosystem achieve the twin transition, towards becoming green and digital. The scenario work entails three phases:

  1. Factors of change
    • Pre-workshop survey on factors of change
    • 1st Workshop on factors of change: March 9 
      • Presentation of project results: Delphi results and factors of change (future sheets) 
  2. Future scenarios 
  3.  Scenario narratives
    • 3rd Workshop: March 30 Wed 13:30-15:30 CET
      • Presentation of preliminary results of the stakeholder survey
    • 4th Workshop on narratives: May 11 Wed 13:30-15:30 CET
